The India-Pakistan tussle reached new heights on Thursday, when commentator Sana Mir referred to one of the Pakistani players as one hailing from the Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The cricketer turned commentator addressed the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as 'Azaad Kashmir', thereby getting slammed by the Indian cricket fans for bringing politics into sport.
Sana Mir criticised for infamous 'Azad Kashmir' remark
During Pakistan Women's most recent World Cup clash against Bangladesh, Sana Mir commented that Natalia Pervaiz hails from Azad Kashmir instead of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
As Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India, her comments questioned the Indian sovereignty and were not perceived well by the Indian fans, who slammed her for politicising the sport intentionally. Although Sana Mir issued a clarification, she continues to receive backlash for her statement.
All details about Sana Mir, former Pakistan cricketer
Sana Mir is a former Pakistani cricketer, who also led the Women in Green in international cricket. She was a useful spin bowler who could also chip in with handy contributions with the bat. She represented Pakistan Women in 226 international matches, including 120 ODIs and 106 T20Is.
Born on January 5, 1986, in Abbottabad, Sana Mir was more successful in the ODIs than T20Is, scalping 151 wickets at an average of 24.27 and a strike rate of 39.3. Apart from that, she also struck 1630 runs at a modest average of 17.91 and a pretty poor strike rate of 43.23.
Talking about T20Is, Sana Mir played 106 matches in the format, bagging 89 wickets with her off-spin bowling. She didn't have a great time with the bat either, managing only 802 runs at an average of 14.07 and a strike rate of 70.66.
Additionally, Sana Mir led Pakistan Women in 72 ODIs and 65 T20Is, winning 52 matches combined across formats. The fact that Pakistan Women lost 81 matches during her tenure shows a net negative impact as the captain of the side.
