Jasprit Bumrah, India’s generational fast bowler, has redefined pace bowling since his debut in 2016. Bumrah is special not only for his unconventional action but also for his precision and clever mind.

In his 9-year-long career so far, Bumrah has 219 wickets in Tests, 149 in ODIs and 96 in T20Is. He is widely known as India’s national treasurer for his consistency across 3 formats.

Apart from unusual action, Bumrah first rose to fame for his deadly yorkers, a delivery that soon became his trademark. Although yorkers have long been a part of cricket, Bumrah has elevated the standard with his extraordinary accuracy and consistency.

Jasprit Bumrah has mastered the art of bowling toe-crushing yorkers

In a recent Test match against the West Indies held at Ahmedabad, Jasprit Bumrah used his trademark weapon, the yorker, to dismiss Justin Greaves and Johann Layne

Bumrah’s yorkers are always a treat to watch. Coming in with an unorthodox sling action, he targets the batter’s toes. With late swing and extra bounce, his yorkers are almost unplayable on most occasions.

Interestingly, Jasprit Bumrah has set a new precedent with yorkers. Since his debut in 2016, he has bowled 198 yorkers, conceding just 77 runs and picking 12 wickets at 7.00 average.

During this time period only Mitchell Starc has had more success with yorkers, and that is evidence that Bumrah is among the deadliest pacers in world cricket.

So, what is it that makes Bumrah’s yorkers such a threat?

The trademark of Bumrah's yorker comes in a combination of accuracy, unusual action, and mental strength.

  • Accuracy and precision: Bumrah fires yorkers at the base of the stumps or at the batsman's toes in order to minimise the batsman's options. His ability to execute these deliveries with pinpoint accuracy sets him apart from many fast bowlers.
  • Unconventional bowling action: Bumrah's unique action, where his front knee is straightened, and his elbow hyper-extended allows him to easily bowl at pace and with swing. It is very challenging for batsmen to read his deliveries due to this unorthodox style.
  • Adaptability under pressure: Bumrah excels at bowling yorkers in pressure situations, especially in death overs. His temperament and mental strength make him remain consistent at the most pressurised moments, and hence he emerges as a trusted weapon in close matches.

Jasprit Bumrah proves why fast bowling is more than just raw pace

With his toe-crushing yorkers and flawless precision, Jasprit Bumrah shows that fast bowling today is about far more than just speed. While most use raw speed to terrorise batters, Bumrah uses speed combined with careful control, tactical thinking, and mental acumen.

His yorkers consistently hit the base of the stumps or the batter’s toes, and scoring becomes very difficult. Consistently delivering a yorker under pressure is an art that Bumrah has mastered, and it is because of this that he stands apart from the other fast bowlers.

Observing Jasprit Bumrah, it's evident that modern-day fast bowling bestows upon one's intelligence, precision, and flexibility alongside speed.

He exemplifies that raw speed alone is insufficient for success at the highest level. Rather, it is the ability to mix technique with mental toughness and awareness of the situation that defines the modern fast bowler.

Bumrah’s contributions have not only brought success to India but have also reshaped the standards of pace bowling in contemporary cricket.
