On Thursday, January 9, the third season of SA20 commenced with defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape taking on MI Cape Town at St. George Park in Port Elizabeth. It was not a beautiful sight for SEC fans as the defending champions suffered a 97-run defeat.
It was MI Cape Town's first win over the Aiden Markram-led side in SA20 history. Notably, MI, batting first, put 174 runs on the board. Meanwhile, the hosts tumbled for just 77 runs. Delano Potgieter was the star of the match for his five-wicket haul in three overs. Who is this right-arm seamer who found no bidders in the IPL 2025 mega-auction?
Who Is Delano Potgieter?
The 28-year-old right-arm seamer was born in Port Elizabeth in 1996 and has been performing in first-class tournaments in South Africa. Not just a bowler, but Delano is also a valuable contributor with the bat.
He made his debut for Gauteng against Northerns and was in their 2018 Africa T20 Cup, where he scored the highest number of runs he ended up with 217 runs from six matches. He also ended the 2018–19 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge top of Gauteng’s wicket tally with 17 wickets from nine matches.
It is worth noting that even in today's match, Delano scored 25 (12) with the bat and he batted with Virat Kohli's bat, which was gifted to Rashid Khan by the RCB star and the Afghan presented it to Potgieter.
Unfortunately, South Africa are yet to give Delano a national call-up in the shortest format of the match. Further, he was not also shortlisted for the final list of the IPL 2025 mega-auction. Nonetheless, he would hope to catch the selectors' eye with this performance and have a great SA20.
