There are real-life stories that seem more like fairy tales than reality. Lisa Sthalekar's journey to captaining Australia is one such story. 

Indian stars Mithali Raj, Harmanpreet Kaur, and Smriti Mandhana have not yet won a World Cup. However, there is an Indian-born player who has won multiple World Cups playing for another country.  

It's an incredible story of Lisa Sthalekar, who was born in Pune, Maharashtra, and went on to achieve great success with the Australian women's cricket team.


Lisa Sthalekar's incredible journey

Lisa Sthalekar was born in Pune, Maharashtra, but was left at an orphanage when she was just three weeks old. Before getting renamed to Lisa, her name was Laila. She was then adopted by Dr. Haren and Sue Sthalekar, who had initially wanted to adopt a baby boy.

After relocating to Sydney, Lisa Sthalekar started her cricketing journey at the backyard of her house under her father's supervision. 

Lisa Sthalekar began playing professionally and was selected for the Australian women's team. She became the first women's player in the world to achieve 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in ODIs. 

Lisa was part of four World Cup-winning squads: the 2005 ODI WC, 2013 ODI WC, 2010 T20 WC, and 2012 T20 WC. She also captained the Australian side during her career.

Recognized for her exceptional contributions, she was inducted into both the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame and the ICC Hall of Fame. When the ICC’s ranking system began, she was the world’s number one all-rounder as well.
