Veteran Indian cricketer and coach Anshuman Gaekwad is facing a health challenge, having been diagnosed with blood cancer. The 71-year-old has been undergoing treatment at King's College Hospital in London for the past year. A strong display of solidarity has emerged from the Indian cricket fraternity.

Kapil Dev, Gavaskar To Fund Gaekwad's Cancer Treatment

Former teammates, including legendary figures like Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar, have united to offer financial assistance for Gaekwad's treatment. Kapil Dev notably pledged to contribute from his pension.

Recognizing Gaekwad's contributions to Indian cricket, the BCCI has also stepped forward. The Board of Control for Cricket in India recently announced a financial grant of Rs 1 crore to support Gaekwad's medical care.

Who is Anshuman Gaekwad? 

Anshuman Gaekwad was a key figure in Indian cricket, known for his resolute defensive batting, especially against formidable bowling attacks. 

Gaekwad's career spanned from December 1974 to December 1984, during which he played 40 Test matches. In addition to his playing career, Gaekwad served as the coach of the Indian cricket team in two different stints. 

Under his guidance, India reached the finals of the 2000 Champions Trophy, and Sachin Tendulkar thrived on the international stage. Gaekwad, who also played 15 ODIs for India between 1975 and 1987. 

He later took on roles as a selector and a coach, as he contributed significantly to the development of Indian cricket.
