Former India player and head coach Anshuman Gaekwad is going through tough times. The 71-year-old, who coached India to the finals of the 2000 Champions Trophy is suffering from blood cancer.

Gaekwad has been receiving treatment for the past year at King's College Hospital in London. Meanwhile, former India players who have played alongside Anshuman are also concerned for their friend and have even requested BCCI to offer some financial help.

Recently, 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev had urged the apex cricket board in India to bear Anshuman's medical costs. However, in the latest events, the former all-rounder has taken the onus onto his shoulders and stated that he would raise funds from his monthly pension for Gaekwad's treatment.

Not just Dev, but Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri, and the rest of the 1983 World Cup winning squad have united to raise funds for the former India coach's cancer treatment.

“I don’t want the BCCI to do anything. They have done enough for the players and are still doing so. I would want everyone to come forward and help Gaekwad,” Kapil told The Telegraph.

Notably, Mohinder Amarnath, Sandeep Patil, Dilip Vengsarkar, Ravi Shastri, and Kirti Azad are some notable names active in raising funds.

Meanwhile, former cricketer Azad also attacked BCCI and stated that the board should have covered the medical expenses.

“Aunshu’s case should have woken up the BCCI. Sadly the officials haven’t come forward to take it up on a priority basis,” Kirti said.

The board was also under scrutiny recently as they announced 125 crore prize money to 2024 World Cup winning squad, but did not fund Gaekwad's treatment.

It is also to be noted that BCCI provides a monthly pension for former cricketers and since Gaekwad has played 40 Tests and 15 ODIs, he is eligible for the pension. However, the amount is inefficient to meet the treatment target.
