On-field rivalries and heated battles in IPL have been rare but not uncommon events. One such major brawl broke out between successful Indian cricketer Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir back in 2013, which is still considered one of the greatest controversies in the league’s history.

When two fierce and passionate personalities meet in a highly competitive environment, clashes are bound to happen.

Back in 2013, RCB was up against KKR at Chinnaswamy for a crucial IPL matchup. Then, Captain Virat Kohli was steady in the monumental chase before Laxmipathy Balaji dismissed him for 35, with RCB still in need of 80 runs in the 11 overs left.

When Kohli had an ugly spat with Gambhir

Kohli’s wicket was match defining for KKR and therefore the entire team were jubilant. However, tensions flared up when KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir uttered a word or two to a departing Kohli in the heat of the moment.

Virat Kohli, meanwhile in a rush of blood, turned back for a stern reply and both players came charging down towards one another before Rajat Bhatia of KKR separated the duo.

An ugly physical shuffle was averted by the umpires’ timely intervention as they sent Kohli back, who continued to swear on his way to the dressing room.

That being said, the altercation stayed in the news for a while. Moreover, in the aftermath of the ugly brawl, both Kohli and Gambhir faced disciplinary action from the IPL authorities, highlighting the seriousness of the incident and the need to uphold the standards of conduct and sportsmanship in the league.

However, years after the incident, Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir dismissed having animosity against one another and downplayed the incident, citing how both were driven by the passion and adrenaline of the sport.
