'Gambhir Got Carried Away' - Naveen-Ul-Haq's Big Claim Spat With Virat Kohli In IPL 2023

Naveen-Ul-Haq of Lucknow Super Giants opened up on his infamous IPL spat with Virat Kohli, which soon turned into a battleground between Kohli and the then LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir.

Naveen opined that perhaps Gambhir overreacted and got carried away in emotions.

Kohli’s showdown with the LSG dugout was arguably a major highlight of the IPL 2023 season. A harmless sledding incident turned into a major spat between Naveen-Ul-Haq and Virat before Gautam Gambhir stepped in.

While the duo cleared their difference during the ODI World Cup 2023, the Afghanistani pacer recently opened up on the incident while talking to Zalmi TV in PSL.

Naveen shared how things had been building up from both sides since they first met in Bangalore. Apparently, Avesh Khan’s aggressive celebration after a last-ball win triggered Kohli.

He gave it back to Naveen-Ul-Haq during RCB and LSG’s matchup in Lucknow. However, the Afghanistan fast bowler didn’t take it well and reciprocated with the same energy, which gave rise to a major showdown.

"We went to play our away match in Bengaluru. That's where it all started. We won that game - it was very close – so one of our players [Avesh Khan] threw the helmet in excitement after scoring the winning runs. Virat Kohli probably didn't like it.

"Next, their team came to Lucknow. I think I went out to bat at No. 9 or 10 and we had pretty much lost the game by then. So, I didn't expect that I would be sledged. But when it happened, like I said, when someone starts, I can't hold back. After the game, things continued during the handshake too. The sledging came from two guys – Kohli and Mohammed Siraj," the Afghan seamer said on Zalmi TV podcast.

Speaking on Gambhir’s involvement, Naveen said the mentor perhaps got carried away. Gautam’s anger stemmed from the previous game where Harshal Patel tried to Mankad when LSG needed 1 run off the final delivery to win.

"Gautam Gambhir got carried away [with the shush gesture] because in the previous game, when we needed 1 off 1, one of their bowlers wanted to run the non-striker out while running in to bowl."

"Spirit-wise it wasn't looking good because it had proven to be such a good game by then."

Gambhir, who was with LSG for their first two seasons, has shifted his base to work with the two-time champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as their mentor for IPL 2024.
