Virat Kohli exhibited fervent competitiveness and intense aggression in his early cricket days, displaying a relentless drive for victory. One of the earliest demonstrations of his intensity and aggressive zeal was displayed back in the final of the 2008 Under-19 World Cup itself, where his desire for success brought home the ultimate glory for the ‘Boys in Blue’.

While the cricketer made his senior debut later that same year, he encountered one of his toughest overseas trips to date between December 2011 and January 2012, when the MS Dhoni-led brigade travelled to Australia for a four-match Test series.

Mere months after putting up a flop show in England, Virat Kohli sanctioned himself onto the Test stage with a number of fighting knocks in testing Australian conditions.

When Ricky Ponting calmed down Virat Kohli

Team India travelled to Australia in late 2011 for a fresh four-match Border-Gavaskar chapter. After enduring three crushing defeats in the first three Tests, India faced hosts at the Adelaide Oval in the final match of the series.

Virat Kohli, aged 23 at the time, waged India’s lone fightback in the first innings by punching out a majestic 116. Kohli’s 213-ball knock not only marked his maiden Test hundred, but also solidified his rise as India’s next big star.

The innings, however, was laced with several hindrances as the cricketer nearly ran himself out at 99. Moreover, Kohli was also involved in a heated altercation with David Warner mere moments after surviving the runout scare.

Australian legend Ricky Ponting, who was fielding nearby during the time of Kohli’s faceoff with Warner, stepped up to calm the Indian batter.Despite Virat Kohli’s best efforts with the bat, Team India slumped to a huge 298-run defeat, thus conceding the four-match series by a 0-4 margin.

India’s torrid tour of Australia, coupled with the preceding English tour, enforced several changes in team’s Test lineup, with Kohli emerging as one of the leading choices to helm the middle-order for the subsequent decade.
