Ricky Ponting has been one of a kind not only for the Australian team but also for the whole cricketing fraternity, who is lucky to have a player like him. He has been nothing short of exemplary whether it's his batting or his leadership that has helped Australia win numerous titles. On his 49th birthday, OneCricket remembers the time when he became the first batter to score a hundred in each innings of the Test in 2006.

Ricky Ponting's record mastery in 2006 at SCG

Back in 2006, when Australia hosted a Test series for South Africa, Ricky Ponting was about to play his 100th Test game. At the surface of Sydney Cricket Ground, during the third Test of the series, captain Ricky Ponting had a memorable time in his 100th Test as he registered his name at the top of the list of scoring tons in both innings.

South Africa were seemingly going ahead of the Aussies in the game as they smashed 451 runs off the first innings and bowled out the Aussies for 359, carrying a huge lead of 98 runs in their second innings. However, Ponting notched up 120 runs, but his contribution wasn't enough to go past the trail.

On the fourth day of the Test, rain played its part and washed most of the play on day four, which forced the Proteas captain to declare in the morning of day five in order to get a result with setting a target of 287.

Ponting again with his mastery, smacked the Proteas and went on to score an unbeaten 143, helping Australia not just seal the win but the series. He eventually became the Player of the Match and Player of the Series as well, scoring 263 in the match and 515 in the series, leading the Aussies to the famous win.
