Former Indian captain Virat Kohli has always been known for his powerful batting, but his heartwarming gestures off the field are equally commendable.

A story shared by former Indian cricketer and commentator Vivek Razdan highlights Kohli’s respect and humility towards cricket legend Sir Vivian Richards.

Razdan recalled an incident from 2019 when the Indian team went to the West Indies for a bilateral series. It happened when Sir Vivian Richards was unable to find space for his bag in the overhead locker. He was visibly concerned as he opened multiple compartments, looking for room. Despite the plane being almost full and the other players seated, Kohli's response stood out.

“What happened was that the players were seated, and the flight was almost full. Sir Vivian Richards entered the flight with his bag but he could not find a space in the overhead locker since it was full. He was getting very worried and started opening different lockers to see if there was any space. Suddenly I saw Virat got up and started shuffling everyone’s luggage. Everyone kept sitting, and barring Kohli, no one got up,” Razdan narrated.

He continued, Now, don’t forget that Kohli back then was not only the captain of the Indian cricket team but he was the biggest name in world cricket. In the end, Kohli moved his own luggage, kept it below the seat in front of him and made room for Sir Richards’s luggage. Sir Viv patted him on the shoulder and said ‘thank you’.”

This incident, occurring when Kohli was the Indian team captain, showcases his humility and respect for the legends of the game. Kohli’s kind gesture left a lasting impression on Vivian Richards, with whom he shares a good bond.

Virat Kohli stepped down from T20I captaincy in 2021 and later from ODI and Test captaincy, with Rohit Sharma succeeding him.
