Australia’s limited-overs heavyweight Glenn Maxwell has time and again proven his stature as one of the modern-day greats of the game.

Helming Australia’s middle and lower-order for nearly a decade across both white-ball formats, Maxwell has unleashed a number of remarkable knocks from his blade, with one of his most notable ones being the 201* he slapped against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup in India.

The cricketer also holds as many as five T20I centuries in his batting register, and has tallied over 6,000 international runs in his journey. Furthermore, Maxwell’s illustrious career is glittered with a couple of ODI World Cups and a T20 World title.

Despite all the laurels and his burgeoning stature as a world-conquering slog-overs juggernaut, Maxwell seems to have his own cricketing hero in the form of former South African skipper and ex-RCB teammate AB de Villiers.

When Glenn Maxwell praised AB de Villiers

Back in November 2018, i.e., a couple of months after AB de Villiers announced his retirement from international cricket, Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell expressed his admiration for the Proteas legend.

While speaking with Cricket Australia for the latter’s social media handles, Maxwell described AB de Villiers as his favorite international batsman to watch in action. The Australian white-ball legend also claimed that the Proteas star single-handedly changed the rules of ODI cricket through his belligerent batting and audacious stroke-play. He said:

“My favorite international batsman that I have enjoyed watching is AB de Villiers. He’s someone who has probably changed the rules of one-day cricket almost single-handedly. The way he can hit the ball anywhere, he can access different areas and is someone who I have really looked up to. The way he transfers through the gears while he is batting. I’ve had the pleasure of playing against him and watching him go about his business.”

Notably, Glenn Maxwell soon found himself sharing the dressing room with AB de Villiers through the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise in the IPL.

While Maxwell was roped in by the RCB franchise prior to the 2021 edition of the tournament, the season also marked the final competitive outing for the South African icon.
