It was back in 2018 when former Indian cricketer, Gautam Gambhir swiftly responded to former Pakistani cricketer Tanvir Ahmed's criticism of Virat Kohli for not participating in the Asia Cup held in the UAE.

Virat Kohli's absence during Asia Cup in 2018 was a result of a well-considered decision by the BCCI. Given his continuous cricketing commitments, the board decided to rest him in preparation for the then upcoming tours against the West Indies and Australia.

In the midst of a televised debate, Tanvir Ahmed, the former Pakistani cricketer, verbally attacked the Indian captain, labelling him a 'deserter.' However, Gautam Gambhir wasted no time in responding to this statement.

Ahmed said on ABP news:

"Meri nazar mein Virat Kohli bhaag gaye hain. England ki wo poori series khele. England ki Test series mein unko back ka problem hua, uske baad bhi wo matches khele. Jab ek player apne mulk ke liye England ki series khel sakta hai, toh jab usko pata hai Asia Cup jitna bada event aa raha hai, toh jab wo England series survive kar sakta hai toh Asia Cup bhi survive kar sakta hai. Mere mulk ke matches Pakistan ke khilaaf hone hain, ek baar nahi teen baar, toh aise bhaag jaana."

His comment did not go down well with the Gambhir who gave a befitting reply:

"Virat Kohli has 35-36 centuries to his name. He (Tanvir) doesn’t even have 35 international matches to his name."

Gautam Gambhir expressed his dissatisfaction with Tanvir's comments about Virat Kohli and took the opportunity to remind Tanvir about his own international career. The left-handed cricketer emphasized that Kohli has an impressive record of 35-36 centuries in ODIs, while his Pakistani counterpart hasn't even played as many international matches throughout his career.

Gambhir, renowned for his candid demeanour, once again spoke his mind clearly, which was nothing short of the 'Classic Gautam Gambhir response.'
