Known for his versatility and sharp cricketing acumen, Sam Billings has quietly carved a niche for himself across several prominent T20 leagues. A veteran of over 350 T20 games, including 37 internationals for England, Billings once produced a stunning moment of athletic brilliance at the boundary to pull off one of the greatest catches in IPL history.

The Kent cricketer achieved the same nearly a decade ago back in IPL 2016, in his maiden IPL gig and as a part of the Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils) franchise.

When Sam Billings Silenced MS Dhoni

Sam Billings snared a sensational boundary catch back in IPL 2016 to dismiss Rising Pune Supergiants captain and legendary Indian cricketer MS Dhoni. Stationed around the deep midwicket region, Billings leaped across to pluck the ball out of the air, seemingly saving a certain six with the added scalp of Dhoni off Delhi Capitals’ spinner Imran Tahir in the penultimate over of the game.

Unfortunately for Billings, the Delhi Capitals franchise lost the match to the Supergiants the following over courtesy of Ajinkya Rahane’s majestic 63*.

Nonetheless, the Kent stumper made a lasting impression in his maiden IPL season, showcasing his athleticism and presence of mind on the grandest stage, and by marking himself as a valuable asset in high-pressure moments.

He was even retained by the Capitals franchise for the following season, and became part of CSK’s title-winning unit of IPL 2018. Billings last played an IPL game back in 2022, doing so for the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise. With 30 IPL caps, the blistering wicketkeeper-batter has so far scored over 500 runs at a strike rate of nearly 130.
