South Africa clinched the WTC 2025 title by outclassing defending champions Australia in the final at Lord’s in London. The BCCI has unveiled entire schedules for India’s home series against New Zealand next year as well as for the entire Indian domestic season in 2025-26. In other news, the second T20I match between Ireland and West Indies was washed out due to rains in Bready.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Saturday, June 14.
Bavuma’s SA Beat Australia To Clinch WTC 2025
South Africa shrugged off their remaining 69 required runs on Day 4 with five wickets to spare. Resuming the innings at 213-2, South Africa lost captain Temba Bavuma to Pat Cummins for 66 earlier in the day, before overnight centurion Aiden Markram extended his score to 136 from 207 balls.
While Markram fell to Josh Hazlewood at the brink of victory, unbeaten David Bedingham and Kyle Verreynne ensured the Proteas romped past Australia to clinch the WTC 2025 title at Lord’s, their first ICC silverware in 27 years.
IRE vs WI 2nd T20I Washed Out, Series Locked With A Decider
Ireland’s second T20I match against West Indies got abandoned without a ball being bowled at the Bready Cricket Club in Bready. Ceaseless rains at the venue prompted match officials to delay the toss proceedings, before an extended delay eventually forced the abandonment of the game, leaving both teams without any action and the series outcome unaffected.
With the series still level at 0-0, the impending third T20I match between the two sides now stands as the decider.
BCCI Announce Schedule For IND vs NZ 2026
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has unveiled the entire schedule for India’s white-ball home series against New Zealand in January 2026 next year. The New Zealand team will be playing a series of three ODIs and five T20I matches against India, as the ‘Black Caps’ will embark on their first tour to the country ever since securing a historic 3-0 Test series victory in late 2024.
The series will serve as a testing ground for both sides ahead of the ensuing 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
BCCI Release Schedule For Indian Domestic Season 2025-26
The BCCI also released the entire schedule of India’s domestic season for the year 2025-26. The season will commence with the Duleep Trophy on August 28 and will conclude with the Senior Women’s Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy in April next year.
Tournaments like the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Senior Women’s T20 Trophy will now feature a Super League stage instead of knockout fixtures. The Ranji Trophy 2025-26 is scheduled to run from October 15 till February, and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy will be played between November 26 and December 18.
Steve Smith Avoids Surgery As Injury Not Serious
Australia received some respite on Day 4 of the WTC 2025 final against South Africa in the form of Steve Smith’s recovery update. Smith, who sustained a finger injury on Day 3 while attempting a catch, has avoided surgery and his injury is not as serious as it was initially feared.
Smith’s recovery means that the legendary Australian batter might well tour West Indies later this month for a three-match Test series. The series will also kick-off Australia’s campaign for the WTC 2025-27 cycle.
