Team India is entering a fresh phase. With senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retiring from Test cricket, a younger generation is now stepping up to lead.
One of the brightest young talents in Indian cricket, Shubman Gill, has been named the new Test captain. At just 25 years old, Gill will face his first major challenge as captain in the upcoming five-match Test series against England, starting from June 20.
Gill Reveals Leadership Lessons From Rohit Sharma
Ahead of this important series, Shubman sat down with Dinesh Karthik for an interview with Sky Sports, where he spoke about the kind of leader Rohit Sharma was and what he learned under his captaincy.
"Rohit Bhai (Rohit Sharma) is an aggressive captain. He is tactically an aggressive captain. He is someone who is very clear in his communication, before the series, during the matches and after the series." Gill said in an interview.
"The kind of environment that he keeps, I mean even if Rohit Bhai is swearing at you, you wouldn't take it to heart. That's just his personality and it's a great environment to have. You know that even if he is being hard on you, it is not coming from his heart but from a team perspective," he added.
Gill, who made his international debut in 2019 against New Zealand, has played under several captains over the years including Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, and Hardik Pandya. However, he seems particularly inspired by Rohit’s leadership style. Now, as he takes over the reins, Gill looks ready to take the lessons he’s learned and apply them in his own way.
Rohit Sharma's Captaincy Record
Rohit Sharma took over the captaincy from Virat Kohli in 2021, with his first series as full-time Test captain being against Sri Lanka. Under his leadership, India reached the final of the World Test Championship in the 2021–2023 cycle, though they lost to Australia in the final. Rohit also brought success in white-ball cricket, guiding India to major ICC wins including the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy in 2025. These wins helped him bounce back from the heartbreak of losing the ODI World Cup final in 2023.
In his overall captaincy career, Rohit Sharma led India in 142 matches across formats, winning 103 and losing 33. He captained India in 56 ODIs with 42 wins and led them in 62 T20Is, winning 49. In Tests, he captained the team in 24 matches and won 12. In the IPL, he was one of the most successful captains, leading the Mumbai Indians to five titles across 158 matches with 87 wins.
Now, with Rohit stepping away from the longest format of the game, the responsibility is on Shubman Gill to guide the team forward.
