Jasprit Bumrah, India’s premier fast bowler, once shared the intriguing story of how he was signed by the Mumbai Indians (MI) after being spotted by John Wright, the former New Zealand cricketer and MI’s talent scout.

In 2021, Bumrah revealed the details of this turning point in his career during a conversation with Dinesh Karthik on Sky Sports.

The Mumbai Indians' Call

It was in 2013 when Jasprit Bumrah, relatively unknown at the time, was playing in a domestic T20 match between Mumbai and Gujarat. Wright had come to the match with an eye on another player, Axar Patel.

However, Bumrah's bowling caught Wright's attention, despite Jasprit Bumrah not taking many wickets. His economical spell and ability to trouble batsmen with his unique action left an impression on the scout.

Wright decided to watch the young Bumrah in another match and even made inquiries about him. Bumrah, initially unaware of the interest, was informed by Parthiv Patel, his Gujarat teammate, about Wright's inquiries. Bumrah took it as a joke until a few days later when he received a call from the Mumbai Indians, asking if he was interested in joining the team.

The scantily-built pacer from Gujarat's response was enthusiastic, and that marked the beginning of his journey with Mumbai Indians. Since then, he has become a cornerstone of MI's bowling lineup, playing a crucial role in their five IPL title victories.
