One of the leading Test batters of the current generation, Steve Smith is gearing up for his first County Championship season. Smith, who scored a record-leveling 29th Test ton for Australia last week is in talks with England's county clubs for a short stint in the 2023 edition.

According to The Telegraph, Smith could feature in three to four Championship matches in May, ahead of Australia's crucial The Ashes 2023 series in England. Smith's teammate Marnus Labuschagne is already contracted with Glamorgan County Cricket Club (GCCC) for the upcoming season.

The first Test of the five-match series will commence on June 15 at Edgbaston. Smith holds English citizenship and played in the T20 Blast for Worcestershire in 2010. The 33-year-old has represented Surrey County Second XI before moving to Australia to pursue a career with New South Wales.

Smith enjoys an excellent Test record in England, having amassed 1,727 runs at an average of 59.55, which include six hundred and seven fifites. Overall, in 147 First-Class matches, Smith has 12,881 runs with 45 centuries and 56 half-centuries.

The Sydney-born will be in action against West Indies in the second Test at Adelaide starting tomorrow.
