Virender Sehwag, the former Indian opener, recently shared a captivating anecdote during the ICC World Cup 2023 schedule announcement ceremony. He shed light on the iconic moment when Virat Kohli lifted Sachin Tendulkar on his shoulders during the victory lap after the 2011 ICC World Cup final.

Sehwag disclosed that it wasn't just Kohli's spontaneous act of admiration for Tendulkar. In fact, other players had been given the chance to lift the cricketing legend as well. However, they willingly passed on the opportunity, recognising the significance of the moment and the passing of the torch from one generation to the next. This gesture demonstrated the deep respect and admiration that the younger players, including Kohli, had for Tendulkar's immense contribution to Indian cricket.

Sehwag's revelation added another layer of sentiment to that unforgettable scene, showcasing the reverence and camaraderie shared among the Indian cricket team and highlighting the symbolic transition from Tendulkar to the emerging talent, represented by Kohli and his fellow young stars.

“Because we rejected, Sachin was so heavy, we couldn’t lift him. We were old. We have shoulder injuries and MS had knee problems, somebody else had other problems. We gave the burden to the youngsters. You go and pick up Sachin Tendulkar and give him a round. That’s why it was Virat Kohli,” told Sehwag during the iCC World Cup event.

Following the victory in the 2011 World Cup, Virat Kohli and Yusuf Pathan carried Sachin Tendulkar on their shoulders during the team's victory lap. Tendulkar, holding the Indian tricolour, expressed his gratitude to the passionate fans in the stands, creating an enduring moment of celebration and unity.

Since that remarkable triumph, the Indian cricket team has managed to secure only one ICC event victory, which was the 2013 Champions Trophy. Regrettably, their quest to win another global tournament has extended beyond a decade.

Significantly, India will commence their campaign in the 2023 World Cup on October 8 against Australia in Chennai.
