Ashes 2023 | 'Shambolic, Absolutely Shambolic': Kevin Pietersen Lashes Out at England's Day 1 Performance at Lord's

Day 1 of the second Ashes 2023 Test at Lord's Cricket Ground has a lot of drama, angst, and joy. However, for England, it was mainly frustration and nothing else. Lacklustre bowling and poor fielding helped Australia dominate the first day of the Lord's Test, after being put into bat by skipper Ben Stokes.

In helpful conditions, England pacers James Anderson, Stuart Broad, and Ollie Robinson were found lacking, something that former Three Lions batter Kevin Pietersen said in her post-day review.

Runs from Steve Smith, David Warner, and Travid Head saw the visitors pile up 339 runs on the board with just five wickets down on Day 1, where England as per Pietersen were 'shambolic'.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain came down hard on England's intent on the field and lashed out at the bowlers.

Here's what Pietersen said

"Not a lot caught my eye from an English perspective. it's been shambolic, absolutely shambolic. You have overhead conditions, you have a wicket that suits your bowlers. And you have your bowlers running in at 78, 78 and 80 mph. There's one thing, walking here, swarming around and saying 'hey, this is a wonderful team to play in, we are creating the best environment.

But this is not Ashes cricket. I have played Ashes cricket, 30 Tests against Australia. The Australian batters were out on those stairs to bat before the English bowlers this morning. The English bowlers should have been there, showing they are desperate to bowl at Australia,"

Pietersen also questioned England players' friendly behaviour with their opponents, something that during an Ashes Test is rare.

Smith will resume batting on 85*, along with Alex Carey on 11* on Day 2 and hope to take Australia's total past 400-run mark.

The Pat Cummins-led side are ahead 1-0 in the series.
