September 6 is a special day for Indian fans. On this day in 2021, when India toured the Three Lions for a five-match series, they stunned England by registering a victory at The Ovals. The series was levelled at 1-1 before the match, and with the win, India took the lead. 

The match is remembered for Rohit Sharma's heroics as the present-Indian skipper played a 127-runs knock in the second innings and won the player of the match award for his innings.

The hosts won the toss and asked India to bat first. The visitors had a disastrous innings with the bat as they tumbled for just 191 runs. Then skipper Virat Kohli smashed a fifty and also became the fastest player to reach 23000 international runs. However, Shardul Thakur emerged as the top performer with the bat and scored 57. 

In reply, England took a 99-runs lead as the hosts put 290 runs on the board courtesy of an 81-run knock from England's present-stand-in skipper Ollie Pope. Even Chris Woakes, who took a four-wicket haul in the first innings, scored a fifty to put England in the driver's seat. 

Rohit Sharma's First Overseas Test Century

Coming to India's second innings, Rohit Sharma took the onus on his shoulders and smashed a much-needed century. He scored 127 (256) and it is worth noting that it was Rohit's first overseas Test century for India. 

Meanwhile, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant, and Shardul Thakur assisted the hitman with their fifty-plus scores. A great batting performance in the 2nd innings allowed India to take a 367-run lead as they put 466 runs on the board. 

In reply, England got off to the best possible start as Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed stitched a 100-run opening stand. However, things turned south for England as they lost wickets at regular intervals and tumbled for just 210 runs, resulting in a 157 runs win for the visitors. Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah too completed his 100 Test wickets in this match.
