Mohammed Shami, India's front-line pacer, injured his Achilles Tendon during the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 and has been out of action ever since. Despite undergoing surgery overseas and spending countless hours in training at the NCA, Shami has faced a setback that could rule him out of the Border Gavaskar trophy.

Mohammed Shami finished as the leading wicket-taker in ICC ODI World Cup 2023 held in India after Hardik Pandya's injury paved his way into the starting XI. However, little did the fans know that Shami played through a heel injury to bring glory to his nation. He embraced the risk as India needed him for the finals against Australia.

What happened to Mohammed Shami?

The pacer injured his Achilles Tendon during the ODI World Cup and was subsequently sent to London by BCCI for an immediate surgery. He got his stitches removed after a couple of weeks and went to NCA for recovery. Moreover, BCCI president Jay Shah offered his full support to Shami and predicted a potential return in the Bangladesh Test series that concluded last month. However, despite rigorous training in NCA, the pacer wasn't fit enough for international return as his recovery timeline got extended further.

Shami faces setback in recovery

A few weeks ago, reports dropped that Mohammed Shami had faced a setback in his recovery as he developed swelling in his knees. While the fast bowler dismissed the rumours by calling the media reports baseless, Indian captain Rohit Sharma exposed his truth in the press conference held prior to the Test series against New Zealand. He virtually ruled Shami out of the Border Gavaskar Trophy scheduled for next month, saying it's inadvisable to bring in an undercooked Shami back into the setup as it increases the risk of aggravation. Sharma also added that due to swelling, Shami will have to restart his recovery process from square one.

What does future hold for Mohammed Shami?

As per several rumours, Mohammed Shami will require at least 6 more weeks to recover from this knee injury in addition to his troubling Achilles Tendon. That more or less ruled him out of the five-game Test series against Australia. Having said that, if Shami manages to overcome the setback in the slated timeline, he will be eligible to mark a return to international cricket during India's extensive tour of England starting in January 2025.
