In a major development, star pacer Mohammed Shami may likely be unavailable for the upcoming three-match Test series against New Zealand, set to begin on October 16. The seasoned fast bowler, who has been recovering from an ankle surgery earlier this year, was expected to gain match fitness yet his absence from the Bengal squad has raised concerns about his readiness for the international stage.

The Cricket Association of Bengal recently announced their squad for the first two rounds of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, with Shami noticeably missing from the lineup for first two matches. The omission has led to speculation that the 34-year-old may not yet be match-fit.

Although, it is important to mention that Shami’s rehabilitation had reportedly been progressing well. However, without an official update on his fitness status, his chances of featuring in the upcoming Test series against New Zealand seem increasingly doubtful.

Mohammed Shami Doubtful For New Zealand Series

According to Revsportz correspondent, Rohit Juglan, he shared a post on Twitter in which he mentioned that Mohammed Shami is likely to miss the important New Zealand series. The tweet further mentioned that Virat Kohli and skipper Rohit Sharma will reach Bengaluru on October 12.

If he is not available, his absence would be a significant setback for India, especially with the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy series on the horizon. His vast experience, combined with his ability to generate movement and exploit conditions, has made him an invaluable asset in the longest format.

While the BCCI has not yet issued an official statement on his fitness, it is likely that a decision on his availability for the New Zealand series will be made in the coming days. Should Shami miss the series, the Indian team management will be looking to finalize their bowling line-up quickly, with potential replacements.
