Yashasvi Jaiswal's childhood coach and cricketing guardian Jwala Singh revealed an interesting anecdote related to the young Indian opener's journey and tremendous rise in national colours where current skipper and fellow Mumbaikar Rohit Sharma acted as a voice of inspiration for him.

Singh says the incident goes back by 4-5 years when Jaiswal was trying to force his way into Mumbai's first-class side and establish himself in the senior domestic set-up. It was then the 22-year-old got a phone call from Rohit Sharma, who encouraged the elegant batter and assured him he belonged at the international stage.

Speaking to India Today, Singh said Rohit made sure he connected to the youngster, whose struggles and journey resonated with the experienced cricketer, and offered words and remarks that boosted Yashasvi Jaiswal's confidence and spurred him onto the heights he has reached since.

When Rohit Sharma Called Young Yashasvi Jaiswal

"Rohit is a great player, he plays for Mumbai. I remember one day, Yashasvi told me a story. He was playing for Mumbai then. So Rohit called on some teammate's phone and said he wanted to talk to Yashasvi," Singh said.

"It happened about 4-5 years back. He told Yashasvi, 'You are meant to be here where I am right now.' He then quickly called me up and told me about the phone call. He was very excited. Now Rohit is his captain and opening partner, so there is that level of comfort."

In many ways, Rohit continued the Mumbai Cricket tradition of senior figures looking after their young teammates and keeping an eye out on the talents coming through the system while also helping them expand their wings and fulfill their promise.

Jaiswal soon established himself in the Mumbai Ranji Trophy side and after undergoing a prolific run in first-class cricket, got awarded his maiden India cap under Rohit's captaincy in July 2023 on the tour of West Indies. The 22-year-old has since compiled scores of 171, 209 and 214* in his seven Tests and averages 71.75.
