South Africa held the upper hand on most of Day 1 of the ongoing first Test against West Indies, thanks to a brilliant hundred scored by Aiden Markram.

Markram, who is making a comeback after being dropped for South Africa's tour of Australia, thanked new Test coach Shukri Conrad for backing him.

Markam, along with Dean Elgar, added 141 runs for the first wicket before slamming his 6th Test hundred. The Proteas were at stumps 314 for 8, after West Indies bowlers helped their side recover.

Speaking about his 115, the 28-year-old stated that he feels relieved, and this ton matters a lot to him personally.

Here's what Markram said

"It felt today like I was starting on a clean slate. It meant quite a lot to me today. It always seems to be more special when you do it at your home venue, where there are friends and family in attendance. Lots of relief today too. It’s always good when a coach backs you like that, it gives you that extra bit of confidence. He is always clear about his message and where you stand. I am extremely grateful to be back today."

The previous Proteas Test management used Markram as a floater last year, which resulted in a string of poor scores, leading to his ouster ultimately.

Day 2 will begin with Marco Jensen and debutant Gerald Coetzee batting in the middle for the hosts on 17* and 11*, respectively.
