SA vs WI, Session Review: Alzarri Joseph Steals The Show As West Indies Recover

Although the opening day of the first Test between South Africa and West Indies belonged to the hosts more so than the visitors, the Kraigg Brathwaite and Co. fetched back some possession over the game in the last session.

Entrusted to open in Test cricket for the Proteas, Aiden Markram started off the final session with the celebration of his sixth ton in the format.

South Africa's collapse started with the run-out of Tony de Zorzi in the 57th over as the debutant's poor assessment of the third run caused his dismissal.

In the same over, Temba Bavuma scored a naught on his debut game as South Africa's Test captain. Alzarri Joseph trapped him via an lbw.

Joseph continued to work around the oracle as he bowled a peach to end Markram's innings.

While Keegan Petersen and Heinrich Klaasen formed a mini partnership, it could not stop South Africa to go further down as the latter was outdone by Shannon Gabriel.

Kemark Roach and Kyle Mayers smote South Africa in the form of Senuran Muthusamy and Petersen's wickets. While both the batters took reviews against the on-field umpire's lbw decisions, they could not be saved.

Jason Holder also contributed as Kagiso Rabada gave a catch to the second slip.

As many as seven wickets fell in the session with South Africa ending the day at 314/8.

Talking Points

Albeit the session had the West Indies written all over it, Markram's sixth Test century marked a moment of elation in the South Africa camp.

Marcon Jansen withstood the Windies' fierceness. He has looked resilient in his undefeated 17-run knock.

Expectations

With just two wickets remaining for South Africa, the West Indies will most likely pack them early in the morning session of Day 2.

Brief scores:

South Africa - 314/8 (82)

Aiden Markram - 115 (174), Dean Elgar 71 (118);
Alzarri Joseph - 3-60 (16), Kyle Mayers 1-23 (10)
