The infamous Gabba Test between India and Australia will foreover be etched in the history of Indian cricket.

It had aggression, it had emotions, and it showed India's true fighting spirit. The Test match is known for the heroics of Rishabh Pant and Cheteshwar Pujara. But little do people remember about the contribution from Shubman Gill.

Playing in his debut Test series, India were 1-0 down in the series, before they made a stellar comeback at MCG. Team India snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat in Sydney and then the caravan moved towards Australia's fortress, Gabba.

If Pant was the finisher, then Gill was the foundation for historic win!

India were set an improbable target of 328 to chase, which looked almost impossible when Gill walked out to bat, in perhaps his biggest test as an opener. The opener, who has just entered his prime, will play many more classic Test innings in the future, but none would match the pressure, intensity of the Gabba chase.


India lost Rohit Sharma early in the innings, and any other batter would have crumbled under pressure, but Gill was always cut from a different cloth as he took his time and resurrected the Indian innings. Another wicket would have taken Australia to a comfortable position, but Gill, played with both caution and aggression, as he laid the foundation for a famous win.

He was particularly severe towards Mitch Starc, hammering him for a flurry of boundaries and that rattled the Aussie camp. Unfortunately, he was dismissed for a well-compiled 91.

We often remember the end result, but forget the hardwork done at the start. Similarly, people remember Pant's classic knock, but they forget that Gill was the real architect of the chase.
