The Pakistan Cricket Board on Monday named stalwarts Misbah-ul-Haq, Saqlain Mushtaq, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Shoaib Malik, and Waqar Younis as mentors of five teams participating in the Champions Cup domestic tournament.

According to a PCB statement, the big names in Pakistan cricket have been appointed mentors on three-year contracts following a transparent and robust recruitment process.

Waqar Younis, who recently served as a PCB advisor on cricket affairs, and Saqlain Mushtaq, a former head coach of the national team, bring a wealth of experience to their roles. Misbah and Waqar have also had coaching stints with the national team, further enhancing the mentorship team's expertise.

Waqar, who stepped down from his role just three weeks after his appointment, did so as he had himself requested the board first to appoint him for three weeks.

The PCB announced that the first task for the mentors in the upcoming PCB Domestic Cricket Season 2024-25 will be the prestigious Champions One-Day Cup. This exciting event is scheduled to be held in Faisalabad from September 12-29, marking the beginning of the mentors' three-year contracts.

The PCB has taken a significant step to elevate the 50-overs competition by making it mandatory for all top players to participate.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan senior men's cricket team is at the centre of criticism after the Men In Green faced an embarrassing 10-wicket loss to Bangladesh. It has been 1,294 days since Pakistan last won a home Test match. Their loss has stirred up a widespread discussion on the team's poor performance.
