Gautam Gambhir’s confident stance from July is resurfacing sharply after India’s crushing defeat to South Africa in Guwahati. Months earlier, he projected complete stability in the Test side following a hard-fought draw against England in the Manchester Test, insisting the team was settled and far from any transition phase.
“I don't believe in the word transition. This is the Indian team. I don’t use the word transition,” Gambhir said in July after the Manchester Test.
Now, in November 2025, the narrative has dramatically flipped. India have slumped to a 408-run home defeat, losing a second straight home series, and Gambhir has called the side transitional.
“This is exactly what transition is. The young players are learning on the job. You have to give them time,” Gambhir said after the 2-0 series loss against South Africa.
That earlier press-conference clip is going viral across social-media platforms, fueling criticism from fans for confused messaging and inconsistent team direction.
Fans call out Gambhir’s sudden change of words
The change in Gambhir’s statements has become the biggest talking point among fans. The old video from July is now everywhere on social media, and people are openly calling him out for saying one thing a few months back and something totally different now.
The frustration is clear. Indian cricket fans feel that Gambhir’s shift shows hypocrisy, especially at a time when the team is struggling. Many have pointed out how confidently he spoke earlier, and how quickly he has doubled back now that results are going downhill. The contrast has made fans even angrier because it feels like he is trying to escape responsibility.
How July’s words came back to expose Gambhir
The July clip has basically come back to haunt the team India coach. Fans did not forget what Gambhir said back then after the Manchester draw, and the moment he changed his words after the Guwahati Test, they pulled it out and busted him instantly. The backlash is strong because people feel he talks one way when things look good and another when things fall apart.
With India losing two home Test series in consecutive home seasons, emotions are running high. Supporters are tired, disappointed, and fed up with what they see as mixed messages. For many, Gambhir’s change in wording is just another sign of how confused the team has looked under him, both in decisions and results.
