Indian Test discard Prithvi Shaw had a T20 debut to forget for Maharashtra as the 26-year-old was dismissed for just five against Jammu and Kashmir in their Elite Group B match of the 2025-26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy season. His captain Ruturaj Gaikwad found no rescue role either, bowing out early as Maharashtra’s innings sank without a fight.
Maharashtra ended up losing the match by five wickets in the penultimate over to slip to fourth spot on the SMAT 2025-26 Group B points table.
Umran Malik pummels Maharashtra on his T20 return
Batting first at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Maharashtra bundled out for just 130 in 19.5 overs. Star opener Prithvi Shaw became Maharashtra’s first casualty of the innings, in just the third over of the match to Auqib Nabi for a run-a-ball five.
Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad nicked one behind off Yudhvir Singh for just six off eight as Maharashtra slipped to 55-5 at one stage, before Vicky Ostwal and Nikhil Naik compounded handy runs in the backend of the innings.
For Jammu and Kashmir, star fast bowler Umran Malik hogged the limelight alongside Auqib Nabi (3-28), Yudhvir Singh (2-22) and Abid Mushtaq (2-26). Umran himself picked up the important wickets of Rahul Tripathi and a well-set Naik on his T20 return to claim figures of 2-24.
In response, Maharashtra bowlers Arshin Kulkarni (1-24), Rajvardhan Hangargekar (2-32) and Prashant Solanki (2-29) proved ineffective in spite of their wicket-taking spree in the game as Jammu and Kashmir notched up the winning runs in 18.4 overs with five wickets in hand.
For Prithvi Shaw, who only weeks ago racked up heaps of runs in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season for Maharashtra to revive talk of an India comeback, this forgettable Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy outing serves as a reminder that his road back to the national side still demands consistency across formats.
