The historic Women's Premier League (WPL) auction took place last evening with unprecedented amounts being spent on local and international players. However, in line with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) policy, Pakistan-based cricketers remain barred from participating.

Former Pakistan captain Urooj Mumtaz called the omission of Pakistani women players from the WPL 'unfortunate'. As per ESPNcricinfo, the cricketer-turned-commentator stated added that the women's game could bridge the gap between cricketing nations as well.

The WPL auction saw India's Smriti Mandhana rake in the highest bid, going for INR 3.40 crore to the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Australia's Ashleigh Gardner and England's Nat Sciver-Brunt were the highest-bid overseas cricketers, going for INR 3.2 cr to Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians, respectively.

Here's what Mumtaz said

"It is extremely unfortunate to see Pakistan players missing out. "Every opportunity must be fair and inclusive, and all opportunities are steps towards collectively raising the standard of the women's game and globally growing the sport. Most importantly, they bridge the gap in quality between cricketing nations."

Sadly, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) postponed the proposed Women's T20 League to sometime in September this year. This competition is the brainchild of former PCB chairman Ramiz Raja.
