In a heartening development for Indian cricket fans, middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer has been deemed fit for selection ahead of the 2nd Test against Australia in Delhi, starting March 17.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Thursday (February 14), issued a press release to confirm that Iyer has successfully completed his rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and he will join the Indian squad ahead of the Delhi Test.

"India batter Shreyas Iyer has successfully completed his rehab at the National Cricket Academy following his back injury and has been cleared by the BCCI Medical Team. Shreyas will join the squad in New Delhi ahead of the second Test of the Mastercard Australia tour of India for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy."

Why did Iyer miss 1st Test?

For the uninitiated, Shreyas suffered a back injury ahead of last month's ODI series against the BlackCaps. He was subsequently ruled out of both the ODI and T20I series against New Zealand and eventually missed out on the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which India won by innings & 132 runs.

Shreyas' in addition will bolster the Indian middle order, which has been struggling in the past 15 months. In Nagpur, the Indian management opted for Suryakumar Yadav ahead of Shubman Gill; a decision which backfired as SKY managed a mere 20-ball 8.

Iyer has been in cracking form in Test cricket ever since he made his debut against New Zealand in December 2021. His last Test outing saw him carve out an unbeaten masterclass on a raging turner in Mirpur, which helped India recover from 74/7 to ultimately chase down 145.
