"Can't just stroll around": Hayden Criticises RCB Batters For Lack Of Intent

Mohammed Siraj's rousing spell helped the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) return to winning ways in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 after they beat the Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 24 runs on Thursday. While Siraj picked up four wickets, Wanindu Hasaranga's twofer downed the Punjab batters further, who were chasing 175 to win.

Batting first RCB managed 174 runs despite a 137-run opening stand between stand-in skipper Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis. As has been the case this season, other RCB batters failed to capitalise on their magnificent start, which raises questions about the duo's approach as well.

Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden, in harsh criticism of the RCB line-up, lashed out at batters including Kohli and du Plessis for not putting their foot on the pedal and scoring quickly. The duo added 91 runs at the 10-over mark but added just 46 runs in their next six overs.

Speaking on commentary, Hayden, who played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), gave the example of MS Dhoni, while urging batters to improve their strike rate.

Here's what Hayden said

"Can't waste balls, even when one of these two decides to bat till the last five overs, the other has to go, can't just be strolling around. They will have to trust their long batting line-up.

You talk about the impact players in this IPL, the guys have won matches and sides can never afford to be lured into this false sense of security by batting just securely in partnership. The emphasis will always have to be on scoring quickly. Look at MS Dhoni, who was striking at 400 in one match,"

This win puts RCB in fifth position in the IPL 2023 points table, with their next encounter being against table-toppers Rajasthan Royals on Sunday.
