"You don't change kids' nappies that often": Aakash Chopra On KKR's Ever-Changing Openers

For any team to perform well throughout a long tournament like the Indian Premier League (IPL), their opening foundation has to be strong and consistent. While several franchises have settled opening pairs, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have struggled to find themselves a solid duo.

Against the Delhi Capitals last evening, KKR played Jason Roy and Litton Das as their openers, dropping Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Narayan Jagadeesan after a few matches. A horror batting show and an excellent bowling display from the home side Delhi folded KKR for 127.

Roy did manage to show some fight, scoring 43 off 39. The David Warner-led XI chased down the target in the final over, meandering to their maiden IPL 2023 win in the process.

Former KKR opener Aakash Chopra has hit out at the KKR management for changing their opening pair too often in the past few years. Venkatesh Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane, Aaron Finch, Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi, and Sunil Narine are some of the players who have opened the batting for KKR since IPL 2021.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra questioned KKR's decision to drop Jagadeesan as well and said:

"Kolkata made four changes. Who makes so many changes? No one has changed as many openers as they have done. If we see the last two years of this tournament, this team has changed the most opening pairs. You don't change kids' nappies that often.

They got Litton Das and Jason Roy to open this time around. Jagadeesan was doing okay but he was made to sit out. I was seeing Rahmanullah Gurbaz going, there is doubt about that but there were four changes in total."

The former Indian opener also questioned KKR's decision to send Andre Russell as late as No.8.

With two wins and four losses, the Nitish Rana-led side are eighth in the points table and will look to change their fortunes, when they take on Chennai Super Kings at Eden Gardens on Sunday.
