Trent Boult is keen to play the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023 in India, scheduled to be staged later this year. The speedster was part of New Zealand’s insurgency in 2019, where they were upstaged by hosts England in the final by the “barest of all margins”.

As of now, Boult is not a part of New Zealand’s central contract list in order to prioritise time with family. The cricketer also moonlights as a T20 freelancer in various globally recognised leagues like IPL and BBL.

Trent Boult wants to win World Cup 2023 for New Zealand

Despite letting go of his NZC contract, the speedster is aiming to take India flight with the New Zealand team for this year’s ICC ODI World Cup. The ace paceman, who delivered the final over and the subsequent Super Over at the 2019 final, is keen to go one-up for his country by lifting the trophy this time.

While speaking with The Age, he said:

“I want to be there to have another crack and I hope that is still the case.”

Boult also recalled his experience of winning the inaugural ICC World Test Championship in 2021, where they defeated India in the final. The win remains New Zealand’s only ICC title since their success at the 2000 ICC Knockout Trophy (now known as Champions Trophy).

Reflecting his journey throughout the Championship and his win in the final, he stated:

“For us even to get to that stage as a Test-playing nation of however many people (five million), playing probably only eight Tests a year - if that.

“To get two years of results to get into the final, and then beat India - 1.4 billion people - will never happen again. I think that’s one of the proudest achievements any New Zealander could have, when you look at the sheer size of it.”
