On Wednesday, July 30, the ICC updated its weekly ranking charts, and in a surprise move, star India opener Abhishek Sharma dethroned Travis Head to become the new No.1 T20I batter in the world.
The southpaw, who hasn't played a T20I match since February 2025, climbed up the spot because Head has not been performing well. Sharma now has 829 rating points, 15 more than Travis Head.
Sharma, at the age of just 24, has become the youngest Indian in history to claim the top spot in T20I cricket. Meanwhile, this article will look at the other Indian cricketers to have topped the T20I charts.
1. Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli was the first-ever Indian in the history of T20Is to top the ranking charts in the shortest format of the match. Virat, who finished his career with 4188 runs in 125 matches, became the No.1 T20I batter in 2014 after a T20I match during the 2014 T20 World Cup game against Pakistan in March.
Further, in the same year, Virat achieved his career-best rating of 909 against England in September 2014, which also puts him in the third spot on all-time T20I ranking charts.
2. Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav followed the footsteps of Virat Kohli and became the second-Indian after Virat to become No.1 T20I batter after a fifty-run knock against South Africa during the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.
Suryakumar Yadav took the world by storm and held the No.1 spot for a long time. The 34-year-old achieved his career-best rating of 912 against New Zealand in January 2023, which is the second-best in all-time ranking charts, only behind David Malan.
3.Abhishek Sharma
The youngster is only the third Indian to have achieved the feat and also became the youngest Indian to claim the top spot in T20Is. The 24-year-old made his India debut in 2024 and has featured in 17 games.
Sharma has 535 runs and averages 33 in T20Is. Further, the southpaw has two fifties and two hundreds to his name as he continues to be one of the leading contenders for the opening slot for the 2026 T20 World Cup squad.
