Shubman Gill raced towards a scintillating start for India in their high-profile World Cup 2023 clash against New Zealand. Chasing 274 on a lively Dharamsala surface, the youngster notched up over 50 runs for the opening wicket alongside captain Rohit Sharma.

Through the course of his recent run-chase effort, Gill also surpassed Pakistan batting great Babar Azam and former cricketer Hashim Amla for an all-time record in ODIs.

Shubman Gill becomes fastest to scale 2,000 runs

Shubman Gill, who made his ODI debut with a match against New Zealand at Hamilton back in January 2019, has now completed 2,000 runs in 50-overs internationals. The dynamic right-handed opener reached the landmark figure in just his 38th ODI innings, thus making him the fastest batter in the history of the format to do so.

Gill reached 2,000 runs two innings quicker than former South African opener Hashim Amla. Moreover, he achieved the feat a staggering seven innings lesser than Pakistan captain and batting legend Babar Azam. South Africa’s Rassie van der Dussen, another World Cup 2023 star, completed his share of 2,000 runs in the ongoing tournament albeit in his 45th ODI innings.

Shubman Gill was eventually dismissed for 26 by Lockie Ferguson. His current ODI tally stands at 2,011 runs from 38 innings at an average of nearly 65. The batting prodigy has already bludgeoned six centuries and 10 additional fifty-plus scores and is currently one of the handful of cricketers to have an ODI double ton to his name.
