Mohammed Shami made a comeback into India’s playing XI for their high-profile World Cup 2023 clash against New Zealand on a lively Dharamsala surface. The cricketer, playing his first match of the tournament, celebrated the occasion by claiming the third five-wicket haul of his ODI career.

Shami dismissed New Zealand opener Will Young first-up and later returned to break a match-turning partnership between Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell. The Indian speedster also polished off the New Zealand tail in the death as he finished his spell with 5-54 from 10 overs.

New Zealand’s well-set centurion Daryl Mitchell became Mohammed Shami’s fifth victim of the innings after the star-batter mistimed his full ball outside off stump. Mitchell, in his attempt to go big in the final over, cleared his front leg to dispatch Shami for a huge six over deep midwicket only to find Virat Kohli in the deep.

Kohli was seen fired up in his celebration after completing the catch as he along with the rest of his teammates converged around Shami for his comeback five-fer.

New Zealand eventually ended up amassing a competitive 273 from their 50 overs. Daryl Mitchell’s imperial 130 and Rachin Ravindra’s tactical 75 paved way for their colossal total upfront after their top-order was rocked early at the hands of India’s new-ball attack.

Apart from Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj also picked up a wicket each in their 10-over spells while ace spinner Kuldeep Yadav snared two, albeit at an expense of 73 runs from his end.
