Indian captain Rohit Sharma provided stability to his side’s run-scoring charge against England in their recent 2023 World Cup faceoff in Lucknow. Despite running out of partners at the other end, the opening batsman raced to an unbeaten 37 by first drinks break to guide his side past the 50-run mark alongside number five KL Rahul.

Through the course of his latest batting exhibition, Sharma surpassed Pakistan skipper Babar Azam and England captain Jos Buttler to scale a huge ODI record for the ongoing calendar year.

Rohit Sharma stabilized India’s stuttering start at the top by negating England’s new-ball attack and extinguishing Adil Rashid’s threat with confident and counterattacking strokes. Through the course of his innings, the right-handed opener crossed the 1,000-run mark in ODIs for the calendar year 2023, becoming only the third batsman to do so after opening partner Shubman Gill and Sri Lankan star Pathum Nissanka.

Moreover, Sharma became the first captain overall to reach the landmark figure in the year. The match against England marked his 22nd outing since January 1, and the cricketer has scored his runs at an average of over 55. The dashing opener also stacked up two centuries and seven additional fifty-plus scores, and has belted over 50 sixes to lead the six-hitting chart in ODIs this year as well.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam is the next ODI skipper on the list of most prolific 2023 batters with 952 runs to his name. South Africa’s Temba Bavuma with 724 runs, and England legend Jos Buttler with 643 runs are also among the leading run-scoring ODI captains of the year (member nations).

Rohit Sharma eventually raced to his 50, the 54th of his glittering ODI career and the eighth of this year to sustain his run-scoring spree at the 2023 World Cup.
