Pakistan’s high-octane World Cup 2023 clash against South Africa took a dramatic turn in the evening after concussion substitute Usama Mir trapped well-set Proteas batter Rassie van der Dussen against the run of play.

The South African number three, having shared a 54-run stand with Aiden Markam, was dismissed under seemingly controversial circumstances considering the initial replays upon DRS had indicated that the ball was clearly missing stumps.

In-form South African batter Rassie van der Dussen took his time to reach 21 and guided South Africa past the 100-run mark with Aiden Markram to lead the team’s recovery after early jitters. Just when he looked well settled at the crease, the cricketer was seemingly trapped in front of stumps by concussion substitute Usama Mir, who was filling in for Shadab Khan.

On-field umpire Paul Reiffel instantly raised his finger to uphold Mir’s appeal, which prompted Rassie to go upstairs with a DRS call. Initial replays on HotStar indicated that the ball was missing stumps on ball tracking, before the display changed to “umpire’s call”, thus confirming the departure of the Proteas batting star.

Owing to the controversial nature of the wicket, numerous cricket enthusiasts, including Pakistan fans, stormed to X (formerly Twitter) and questioned the legitimacy of the dismissal. A number of fans even alleged that the ball tracking footage was “tailored” to favor the Pakistan team. Regardless, the match against South Africa in Chennai marks a must-win one for Pakistan in their bid to keep their semi-final hopes alive in the tournament.

Earlier in the contest, the ‘Men in Green’ amassed 270 runs on the board with captain Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel shaping up crafty half-centuries in the innings.
