Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is not one of those IPL franchises which makes too many changes after a loss, but on Sunday, eyebrows were raised when Ruturaj Gaikwad decided to make a shocking move by dropping their star all-rounder, Sam Curran from the playing XI against Rajasthan Royals.

CSK won the toss and Gaikwad elected to bowl first on a tricky surface, but when announcing the team, he stated that Sam Curran misses out and his fellow Englishman, Jamie Overton replaces him in the playing XI.

Why Sam Curran was dropped Vs RR?

For starters, Sam Curran played in both the matches for CSK in IPL 2025 and had a flop show with both the bat and ball. He didn't create any impact and for this crucial game, Gaikwad decided to drop him.

With the bat, he has only accumulated 12 runs in 2 matches, at a strike-rate of 54, which showcases his inability to clear the fence in T20 format. With the ball, things look a bit more ugly for the English all-rounder.

He has failed to grab a single wicket and has an economy 11.75, which shows his inability to control the flow of runs for the CSK side.

Why Jamie Overton is playing above Curran?

The English all-rounder is a like-to-like replacement for Curran, but has more pace than the left-arm seamer. He is quite deceptive and will get extra bounce from the surface as well. Plus, he is also a handy lower-order hitter of the ball and has time and again proven his worth with the bat, something which CSK lower-order needs at the moment.
