Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant was adjudged as ‘Player of the Match’ after his team routed Gujarat Titans by six wickets at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on April 17. Interestingly, the dashing wicketkeeper-batter scored just 16 unbeaten runs in the game to win the honour.

Here at OneCricket, we will give a detailed report as to why Rishabh Pant won the ‘Player of the Match’ award despite his seemingly below-par effort with the bat.

Rishabht Pant wins POTM for 16*, here’s why

After Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant won the toss and invited Gujarat Titans to bat first, his bowlers folded up the hosts’ entire batting line-up for just 89 in 17.3 overs.

Ishant Sharma (2-8), Mukesh Kumar (3-14) and Tristan Stubbs (2-11) all made timely breakthroughs in the innings to hand Delhi Capitals a meagre target in the run-chase.

In response, the Capitals reached 65-2 in just 4.5 overs before Abhishek Porel’s dismissal enforced the arrival of captain and number five Rishabh Pant.

The dashing wicketkeeper-batter subsequently punched out a tense 16* from just 11 balls with a boundary and a six to his name, and stormed his side past the finishing line with more than 11 overs to spare.

Despite Pant’s mere 16*-run effort, he was adjudged as ‘Player of the Match’ after the game. While one would expect someone like Ishant Sharma, Mukesh Kumar or Jake Fraser-McGurk (20 off 10 balls) to bag the honour, the Capitals skipper was likely rewarded for his match-winning leadership and for pouching two catches and two stumpings during the first half of the game.

Through the outcome, Pant’s Capitals lifted themselves up to number six on the IPL 2024 points table. They will now face SRH in match number 35 of the tournament at Delhi on April 20.
