Why Anrich Nortje Is Not Playing PBKS Vs DC IPL 2024 Match?

As Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals took field against Punjab Kings in their opening match of the IPL 2024 season on March 23, one of the notable omissions from their playing XI turned out to be that of burly South African paceman Anrich Nortje.

Nortje became one of the 16 cricketers to be retained by the Delhi Capitals franchise back in November 2023 during the IPL 2024 player retention phase. The speedster had originally joined the Capitals group back in 2020.


Why is Anrich Nortje not playing against PBKS?

Anrich Nortje was ruled out of the Delhi Capitals’ playing XI against Punjab Kings on March 23 as he is yet to gain full fitness. The cricketer recently made his return to competitive cricket in South Africa after an untimely injury had sidelined him for months.

Nortje ended up missing the entire 2023 World Cup in India last year, as well as South Africa’s entire home commitment against India in late-2023 and early 2024. Moreover, he was also ruled out of the entire SA20 2024 season for Pretoria Capitals.

Earlier this month, the 30-year-old fast bowler made his first outing in competitive cricket in nearly six months by turning up for Warriors in their CSA T20 Challenge match against KwaZulu-Natal Inland. He played only three matches, all in Gqeberha, over the course of two weeks before arriving in India for the IPL 2024 season.

As of now, Anrich Nortje’s exact return for Delhi Capitals is yet to be determined. Regardless, the speedster will be tendering his duties in IPL 2024 under close scrutiny from South Africa’s white-ball coach Rob Walter in lieu of this year’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the USA.
