South Africa vs England (Source:@kaustats,x.com)
South Africa has been forced into a major reshuffle in their batting order after stand-in skipper Aiden Markram walked off the field during the 31st over of England’s innings in their final group-stage clash of the Champions Trophy 2025 in Karachi.
Markram, who was leading the side in the absence of regular captain Temba Bavuma (ruled out due to illness), suffered discomfort in his right hamstring and will not take the field for the remainder of England’s innings. According to an official update from CSA, Markram will only come out to bat if absolutely necessary.
Who Will Likely Open With Ryan Rickelton?
With Markram unavailable to bat, South Africa is expected to push Rassie van der Dussen up the order to open alongside Ryan Rickelton. However, it is important to mention that van der Dussen has never opened in ODIs for South Africa before.
Despite being an experienced middle-order batter, van der Dussen will be stepping into unfamiliar position if he takes on the role. His adaptability and technique will be tested as South Africa looks to chase down England’s total.
It is also important to mention that South Africa will likely open the batting with Rassie van and Ryan Rickelton. Stubbs will likely come in to bat for Proteas at the fourth position, as he has mostly played at this position itself.
The team and management will not likely disturb the original batting line-up and stick with the same order. However, it is also important to note that, if Proteas likely go with Stubbs as an opener, this decision might backfire on them.
