Mumbai Indians lost their batting plot after openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan provided them a blazing start in the powerplay. Despite racing to above 60 in just six-and-a-half overs, the five-time winners lost wickets in succession to eventually be content with 157 in the end.

The Chennai Super Kings, in response, overhauled their task with almost two overs in hand. While it was Ravindra Jadeja who starred with the ball for CSK by snaring three Mumbai Indians wickets early in the game, Super Kings number three Ajinkya Rahane aced the run-chase with a 27-ball 61.

Rohit Sharma says middle-order failed to capitalise on opening stand

After the match, Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma acknowledged that his middle-order failed to capitalise on the start provided by him and Ishan Kishan. The cricketer claimed that the pitch was good to bat on and they fell 30-40 runs short upfront.

Sharma also praised CSK spinners for putting a lid on Mumbai Indians scoring rate, considering Ravindra Jadeja and Mitchell Santner claimed five wickets between them for just 48 runs off their eight overs.

“We lost our way in the middle. Did not capitalise on the start. It was a good pitch, we were 30-40 runs short in the middle. Credit to their spinners, they bowled well, kept us under pressure and we did not respond well. We need to try different things, need to attack, need to be brave,”

The Mumbai Indians captain also hinted out on giving an extended run to some of the youngsters in the team. The legendary opener added that the seniors also need to step up their game if Mumbai Indians want to make a comeback this season. He said:

“We have a couple of guys who are young into the IPL. Gotta give some time to them. It will take time, but we need to back them up and show enough trust in their ability. The senior guys need to step up, starting with me.”
