The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) acquired Ben Stokes at the auction late last year for the ongoing IPL 2023 season. The star all-rounder was roped in by the franchise for a staggering sum (INR 16.25 crores), and has been considered as its potential future captain by a legion of fans and cricket experts.

While no official announcement was made by the franchise at any stage since his induction, Stokes’ English teammate Moeen Ali has now given his take over the matter.

Moeen Ali gives his take on rumours over MS Dhoni’s successor

Ravindra Jadeja was appointed as CSK skipper last year. However, the team’s listless run in the first half of the tournament prompted the captaincy return of MS Dhoni. While Dhoni is also leading his side in the ongoing season, the franchise will be looking for a new candidate for the top job considering the legendary wicketkeeper-batsman, now 41, is currently at the fag end of his playing career.

Several fans and cricket experts were speculating England’s Test skipper Ben Stokes as an ideal replacement choice for Dhoni. The all-rounder was roped in by the franchise at the IPL 2023 auction in December 2022, i.e., after he enjoyed unprecedented success leading the England’s Test team with 10 wins from 12 matches.

His English teammate Moeen Ali, however, has refuted such speculations by stating that the franchise and team management have not discussed over the matter yet. When asked if Stokes was being considered as a potential CSK captain for the future, the cricketer said:

“There's no real such leadership group: you have the captain and the coaches, and they talk. If Dhoni wants Ben Stokes' advice, or a chat with him, it's a very open environment in that changing room.”

Stokes failed to live up to his expensive price tag with underwhelming returns for CSK in their first two games of the season. The all-round veteran has so far managed just 15 runs in two innings and bowled an expensive over against the LSG.
