The love affair between Mohammed Shami and the World Cup continues. The ace pacer has been always at his best whenever he steps out for India in World Cup cricket. The 33-year-old got off to a great start to his World Cup campaign as he took nine wickets already in the first two games he played and set the tournament on fire with his incredible seam bowling.

And it was no different when India came up against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. Shami took another five-wicket haul, his second in the tournament and completely stole the show in Mumbai. The incident happened in the last ball of the 18th over, when Sri Lanka’s number 10 Kasun Rajitha edged it through to Shubman Gill at second slip, leaving Sri Lanka nine down for only 49 runs on the board.

It was a length delivery from Shami towards the outside off line and Rajitha, who was trying to drive it with hard hands, edged it through with Gill making no mistakes at the second slip. Shami went on his knees in delight as he also became the highest wicket-taker for India in World Cup cricket surpassing legendary left-arm seamer Zaheer Khan.

Here is the video of Mohammed Shami completing his second five-wicket haul in this World Cup.

Shami now has 45 wickets in just 14 innings in World Cup cricket, including three five-wicket hauls which is also the joint most with Australia’s Mitchell Starc. Eventually, Sri Lanka bowled out for just 55 with India becoming the first team to qualify for the Semi Final stage. It was a demolition job from the Indian bowlers as they never allowed the Lankan batters to settle in the chase.

Shami was introduced as the first change after some early fireworks in the powerplay from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. The duo reduced Sri Lanka to 14 for 4 till the time Shami came into the attack. Earlier, team India posted a formidable 357 for eight in the first innings with Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer scoring half centuries.

India have now won each of the seven games they have played and are comfortably sitting at the top of the points table. They will be back in action in their next fixture against an inform South Africa on Sunday at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
