Brief Scores: India: 357-8 (50 overs) [Shubman Gill: 92 (92), Virat Kohli: 88 (94); Dilshan Madushanka 5/80 (10), Dushmantha Chameera 1/71 (10)] defeated Sri Lanka: 55 all out (19.4 overs) [Kasun Rajitha: 14 (17), Maheesh Theekshana: 12* (23); Mohammed Shami 5/18 (5), Mohammed Siraj 3/16 (7)] by 302 runs.

Team India demolished Sri Lanka in Mumbai to sustain their unbeaten World Cup 2023 run with another emphatic win, one which took them above South Africa on the points table and further enhanced their NRR.

Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Iyer lift IND to 357

Sri Lanka’s in-form pacer Dilshan Madushanka stunned a capacity Wankhede crowd by rattling Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s stumps within the opening over of the match. However, his opening partner Shubman Gill and fellow star-attraction Virat Kohli forged 189 runs together for the second wicket to lead India’s recovery.

Just as the two inched closer to their respective centuries, Madushanka returned for a new spell and dismissed both in the space of two overs, thus forcing Team India to re-think their death-overs strategy. Fortunately for the hosts, Shreyas Iyer at number four provided the run-scoring impetus in the backend by punching out a 56-ball 82. Ravindra Jadeja also slapped a 35-run cameo in the final few overs to take India to a colossal 357-8 by the end of their innings.

Madushanka, who dismissed Kohli (88) and Gill (94), eventually bagged five wickets to finish with 5-80 in the high-scoring innings.

Siraj, Shami abolish Sri Lanka inside 20 overs

Indian pace demons Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj both accounted for an opener each, off the first ball of their spells no less, as Asia Cup 2023 demons came back to haunt Sri Lanka’s troubling top-order in Mumbai.

Siraj, in particular, went on a rampage as the speedster also dismissed Sadeera Samarawickrama and captain Kusal Mendis within his opening spell as Sri Lanka slumped to 3-4 inside the first four overs of the run-chase.

Emboldened by Bumrah and Siraj’s early strikes, Mohammed Shami cleaned up the tail to finish with a five-fer of his own, claiming 5-18 from his five overs. Sri Lanka’s response eventually extinguished at 55 in 19.4 overs, as they found themselves a staggering 302 runs short of their target to face a certain elimination from the World Cup 2023 semi-final race.
