In a thrilling encounter at the VCA stadium in Nagpur, Vidarbha's veteran pacer Umesh Yadav showcased his skills on Day 1 of the Ranji Trophy 2024 clash against Saurashtra. Winning the toss and opting to bowl, Vidarbha's decision proved wise as Yadav led a formidable bowling attack, rattling Saurashtra's solid batting lineup.

Umesh's stellar performance saw him claim an impressive 4/56 in the first innings, marking his 13th four-wicket haul in the Ranji Trophy format. 

The 36-year-old pacer's impactful spell led to Saurashtra being bundled out for a modest 206 runs. Umesh's magic began in the 25th over when he dismissed Vishvaraj Jadeja, followed by the crucial wickets of Sheldon Jackson and Arpit Vasavada, who succumbed to a duck.

In the next over, Umesh continued his onslaught by dismissing Prerak Mankad for a golden duck, leaving Saurashtra struggling at 153/6. 

The experienced campaigner's remarkable figures contribute to his impressive record of 360 wickets from 117 First-Class matches at an average below 30. Umesh boasts 13 four-wicket hauls and 15 fifers in this format.

Despite a promising start with openers Harvik Desai and Kevin Jivrajani adding 63 runs, Saurashtra faced a setback as wickets tumbled. 

Harvik Desai's fifty and contributions from Cheteshwar Pujara and Sheldon Jackson helped Saurashtra reach 206 in the first innings. Umesh Yadav starred with 4/56, while Aditya Sarwate and Harsh Dubey claimed two wickets each.

Umesh Yadav, a stalwart who has represented India across all three formats, has a Test record of 170 wickets from 57 matches, making him the 12th-highest wicket-taker for India in Tests. 

His Test career, which began in 2011 against West Indies, includes three fifers and six four-wicket hauls, placing him among the elite group of 23 Indian bowlers with 100-plus Test wickets.

As the action-packed day concluded, On day 1, Vidarbha found themselves at 26/4, trailing Saurashtra by 180 runs.
