The BPL 2024 season-opening game between Durdanto Dhaka and Comilla Victorians went until the last over, wherein Roston Chase pulled off a screamer on the field to keep his side, the Victorians, in the hunt.

A new season of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) kicked off earlier today with the inaugural game scheduled between Dhaka Durdanto and defending champions Comilla Victorians.

Dhaka captain Mosaddek Hossain opted to field first and managed to restrict Victorians to a decent score of 143. Given the conditions of Shere Bangla Stadium, the game was evenly poised at mid-innings break.

However, Dhaka openers Danushka Gunathilaka and Mohammad Naim put together a sensational partnership of 101 runs before Naim lost his wicket to Tanvir Islam.

In an interesting turn of events, Naim's wicket triggered an unnecessary collapse as Comilla found its feet again in the game. The Victorians' pace attack bowled a few tight overs to stretch the game until the final over, thus allowing themselves a fighting chance.

Mustafizur Rahman tried to execute a wide yorker with only four needed off the final over but missed the length. Meanwhile, the Durdanto batter, Irfan Sukkur, tried to take advantage of Rahman's miscue and attempted a drive.

But he, too, failed to execute his plans and got a thick outside edge. While the ball seemed to be headed to the boundary rope, big man Roston Chase took an excellent diving catch to send Irfan packing.

Stationed at backward point, Chase saw the ball fly like a bullet off Sukkur's bat. But he took a chance and dived to his left to pull off an absolute screamer. Had Chase delayed his jump by even a microsecond, the ball would have edged past him towards the boundary rope. However, Roston Chase stepped up to allow his team a fighting chance.

While Comilla Victorians ended up losing the season opener, Roston Chase's exceptional efforts on the field will serve as a source of motivation for the Victorians to come out stronger in the next game.
